How do we help achieve a cannabis-free life?
Our cannabis addiction treatment is highly personalised and catered to each patient and his/ her needs. It is also why we are so successful in helping patients who use it or are addicted to it.
It consists of several phases that the patient must progress through. The aim of the treatment is to not only hep the patient achieve abstinence but also maintain abstinence after rehab.
The first and most important phase uses psychology and sessions with the assigned psychologist. The psychologist helps the patient identify and work through the specific feelings, thoughts and situations that have triggered the smoking of joints or any use of cannabis. During this phase, group therapy and group sessions are key to developing skills and techniques to tackle obstacles.
The aim is for the patient to become aware of the problem with consuming cannabis (in any form) and its consequences. This awareness is essential to establish a truly effective abstinence.
*In the case of adolescent patients, we involve the family in the treatment program so that they also fully understand the addiction and the the treatment. It is also essential to advise parents on how to deal with the problem and how to communicate with the patient.

Cannabis withdrawal syndrome
Cannabis withdrawal is a well‐characterised phenomenon that occurs in approximately half of regular and dependent cannabis users after abrupt cessation or significant reductions in cannabis products that contain Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Withdrawal symptoms typically start 24–48 hours after the last joint or cannabis product and most symptoms generally peak at days 2–6, with some symptoms lasting up to 3 weeks or more in heavy cannabis users. The most common features of cannabis withdrawal are anxiety, irritability, anger or aggression, disturbed sleep/dreaming, depressed mood and loss of appetite. Less common physical symptoms include chills, headaches, physical tension, sweating and stomach pain.
Complicated withdrawal may occur in people with concurrent mental health issues and/ or polysubstance use.
At CITA, thanks to the help of professionals and specialists, symptoms usually stabilise and become more bearable and manageable in the short term, sometimes even days.
And although occasional use of the drug has relatively mild effects, frequent use of a high dose over a long period of time could have serious and permanent consequences.
One possible long-lasting effect that is widely discussed is Amotivational Syndrome*. The existence of this syndrome is not supported by any scientific evidence, but there is no doubt that very chronic users of marijuana suffer from the characteristics of this syndrome.
(*Amotivational Syndrome is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterised by a variety of changes in personality, emotions and cognitive functions such as lack of activity, inward-turning, avolition, apathy, incoherence, blunted affect, inability to concentrate and memory disturbance.)
What our patients say about us
Types of cannabis cessation treatment
We offer two types of treatment to stop smoking joints, a habit that can be quit in our clinic.
The consumption of joints in Spain is high and that is why CITA has a HIGH rate of cannabis and marijuana rehabilitation. Smoking cannabis is bad and smoking cannabis every day can lead to addiction.
Group treatment for marijuana detoxification
Through group treatment patients learn to anticipate obstacles to new skills and develop coping skills.
With adolescents, it is advisable to involve the family. It is essential to advise parents so that they know how to deal with the problem and how to treat the adolescent without dramatisation. The patient must be educated so that they know how to stop smoking marijuana.
It is also necessary to train them in the acquisition of guidelines that are related to coherent norms between different members of the family and to train them in communication skills and in the contingency contract between the parties (parents-child).
When treatment includes the family, it increases the retention and attachment of the adolescent to marijuana treatment.
Marijuana addiction also has negative consequences that affect the patient’s environment, and usually the cause is marijuana withdrawal syndrome. This is why the marijuana detoxification process is complicated, but feasible.

What is marijuana detoxification treatment like?
Many of our patients ask how they can stop smoking marijuana. The treatment is divided into two individual and tailor-made phases for the best rehabilitation and early recovery from cannabis, marijuana or hashish abuse. These are detoxification and rehabilitation.
As we have already mentioned, any addiction treatment carried out at CITA Clinics is personalised, and each case requires a specific plan. That is why this treatment has several phases that must be overcome progressively.
Phase 1: Cannabis withdrawal
The initial phase of cannabis and marijuana detoxification starts with the total elimination of consumption, with no minimum doses or using less in order to quit marijuana all at once. This is achieved by suppressing the THC accumulated in the body as a result of the consumption of these drugs. Quitting smoking marijuana or cannabis in one go means gradually recovering normality in the body.
The first step in finding out how to kick marijuana addiction is for the addict to accept the adverse effects of its use.
The first step in knowing how to kick marijuana addiction is for the addict to accept the adverse effects of marijuana use. This stage can last for days, even weeks, depending on the patient’s habitual use until the start of therapeutic detoxification.
In addition, not only does the patient begin to recover, but multidisciplinary psychotherapy is also used to continue with the detoxification of cannabinoid consumption.
Phase 2: Cannabis rehabilitation
The phases of marijuana rehabilitation and the patient’s reintegration are subject to multidisciplinary, psychological and educational therapies, so that the recovering patient manages to move away from the consumption patterns and solve the consequences that led him or her to consume.
Between these stages, the following topics are worked on:

FAQ Frequently asked questions about marijuana cessation treatment
When does cannabis withdrawal occur?
It appears in people who have been using hashish, marijuana and other cannabis derivatives for a long period of time. Many users suffer from this syndrome when they want to stop using suddenly and without professional help. With professional guidance, the symptoms usually stabilise within a few days, making the process much more manageable for the cannabis addict.
What types of treatment are available to cure cannabis addiction?
There are basically two types of treatment: individual and group.
What does individual treatment to stop using cannabis consist of?
It is a personalised treatment adapted to the circumstances and needs of the patient, combining psychological therapies and the learning of skills and guidelines to help them successfully cope with the detoxification process.
What is the group treatment to stop smoking hashish and marijuana like?
Group treatment is a good option for patients to strengthen their will to stop using marijuana. In this type of therapy they learn coping skills and techniques that will be essential to ensure healing.
This type of cannabis addiction treatment is especially fruitful for young people. Adolescents learn guidelines that will be important for them to avoid relapse in the future. This, of course, with the important collaboration of the addict’s closest family or affective nucleus.
What is the initial phase of cannabis detoxification treatment like?
In this initial phase, consumption ceases completely, with no place for minimum doses or consuming less in order to give up marijuana gradually. At this early stage it is important that the body cleanses itself and frees itself from the need to get its dose of THC.
But none of the above is achieved without an acceptance of the problem and the negative effects of use by the user. This initial willingness can be seen as the first necessary step towards a cure and an end to joint addiction.
What is THC?
THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. It is responsible for the psychotropic, mood-altering and perceptual effects that accompany its use. THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid that is primarily responsible for the ‘high’ or ‘stoned high’ that is often felt when smoking joints. The effects of THC can be experienced not only when marijuana is smoked, but also when it is ingested.
What is withdrawal like during cannabis detoxification?
We are talking about one of the most widely consumed drugs in the world. Withdrawal syndrome is characterised by a combination of physical and emotional reactions, popularly known as “mono”. It is at its worst during the first week after stopping smoking or ingesting cannabis. The withdrawal syndrome can last up to one or two weeks.
The most common symptoms are irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, mood swings, tendency to depression and headaches.

How effective is the full recovery of the patient who comes to our detoxification centres?
This is a difficult question to answer because, as we can imagine, the healing process is never linear and ascending. The addiction clinic has a very high emotional component and it will be the world of emotions and how the patient goes through them that will determine the success of the treatment.
Of course, CITA offers all its professional potential, state-of-the-art knowledge in the treatment of addictions, technical tools to guide patients in the prevention of relapses, accompaniment throughout the process, and the family all the affection and emotional support (and, in some cases, financial support) to bring the process to a successful conclusion. The patient, of course, puts all his or her desire and enthusiasm to be cured. In this context, CITA detoxification centres strive to ensure that each and every one of our patients get what they have come for. From here, we go along the way.
